Toitū: Visual Sovereignty

Super excited to be able to bring Toitū: Visual Sovereignty to our South Asian diaspora and wider communities. All are welcome. We remain humbled by the generosity and aroha of Nigel Borell (Ngāi Te Rangi, Ngāti Ranginui,Te Whakatōhea,Te Rarawa,Ngāti Apakura,Ngāti Maniapoto) director Chelsea Winstanley (Ngāti Ranginui and Ngai Te Rangi) for making this possible.

The film follows artist and curator Nigel Borell as he brings together the largest Māori exhibition ever with over 300 works and 100 Māori artists at the Auckland Art gallery. Five years in the making, this documentary bears witness to both celebration and the ongoing constraints between colonial institutions and Māori self determination.

The screening will be followed by an opportunity for Q and A with Nigel before we move into conversation as we explore our theme - being in relation.

Our karakia and opening words will be offered by Mana Wāhine, Bianca Ranson (Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Kahu ki Whaingaroa). Bianca's words, work and actions are grounded in solidarity, aroha and collective strength.

2pm - 3pm - Social - move to Foyer area, drinks and snacks available to purchase We would like to acknowledge that our event will be happening during the month of Ramadan so this part of our programming is optional.
