Finally we are back at Tomago House - it nearly didn't happen and we don't know just how long we have before things may change and we can no longer investigate! So take advantage of our dates for 2021 and join in.

This homestead is very special with loads of very interesting activity that has been noted over the years.

Maria Windeyer moved into Tomago House in 1847 and the story goes that she still keeps a close eye on her homestead in the Hunter Valley.

HISTORY

In the 1840's the estate boasted 5,000 acres (30 of those were vines), a chapel and a pleasure garden.
In 2015, it is a modest five hectares of parkland with the sandstone house intact albeit in need of some cosmetic work.
The rural estate is surrounded by a modern industrial estate in Tomago but it offers a tranquil Georgian oasis - storms a few years ago revealed trap doors in Maria's room.

"I knew it was there because it creaked - it's a proper little room. We think she used it because there were still bushrangers and she was a lone woman." said one of the houses volunteers.

The underground cellars, trapdoors and attics all tell stories about the social history and status of the Windeyer family.
Maria became the mistress of Tomago House after her barrister husband Richard died just before they were due to move in.
She was forced to run affairs single handed and despite struggling financially, she made a success.

"Different people have different experiences but I myself spending so much time here it's my world ... it's just one of those things that happens and you learn to live with it."

Former House Custodian

It therefore comes as no surprise that Tomago House has become a favourite for ghost tours.

We will be offering plenty of paranormal investigation opportunities as we break up our small group into three smaller groups and explore the cellars, attic and main rooms of the house.

Anne from Oz Paratech will also be there with all of the most up to date technology.
