Toponymic Tales: Celebrating David Roche Park

As a distinguished figure in the world of dog breeding from Adelaide, South Australia, David Roche left an indelible mark on the canine community both locally and internationally. Best known for his expertise in breeding and showing Afghan Hounds, Roche’s involvement with Dogs SA, formerly known as the South Australian Canine Association (SACA), was a significant part of his life. His exceptional achievements in dog shows and his dedication to the promotion of canine excellence led to the naming of the Dogs SA show grounds in his honour: David Roche Park. This lecture uses the lens of graphic heritage to examine the cultural and historical significance of visual communication artefacts that preserve and promote Roche’s values and legacy associated with his passion for dogs and the Park named after him.

About the SIDA Foundation and the David Roche Foundation Fellowship

This lecture by Dr Robert Harland, is an outcome of the Society of Interior Designers (SIDA) Foundation and The David Roche Foundation Research (TDRF) Fellowship hosted by The University of South Australia (UniSA). The SIDA Foundation supports interior design and interior architecture teaching and research programs at UniSA. The David Roche Foundation welcomes visitors to Fermoy House with its extensive European art collection and gallery with a program of curated exhibitions. Foundation Fellows engage with TDRF collection and vision, reflect the legacy of SIDA and make use of UniSA resources or expertise. Projects are from a range of disciplines, including but not limited to design, art, craft and material culture.
