Tour of Brisbane Arcade
Description
Built between 1923 and 1924, Brisbane Arcade is the city's oldest shopping arcade. It was designed by Richard Gailey Junior, one of Queensland's most decorated architects of the era, and constructed by J & E L Rees and Forsyth & Speering. Dr James Mayne and his sister Miss Mary Emelia Mayne commissioned the design, modelling it on the grand European arcades of the period.
Architectural features include Edwardian Baroque street façades, terrazzo floors and stairs, clerestory lighting, carved balustrades and dado panelling. As a pedestrian thoroughfare, the arcade connects two of Brisbane's premier city streets, Queen Street Mall and Adelaide Street.
Brisbane Arcade has undergone many changes while retaining its standing as one of the city's most recognisable shopping destinations. It was heritage-listed in 1992 in recognition of its historical significance and architectural beauty.
On Saturday, architect Ray Pini of PDT Architects leads 30-minute guided tours at 10.30am, 11.30am and 12.30pm.
