Description

Built in 1956, the Cooroy Lower Mill Site Kilns are the only surviving example of a timber-drying complex once common throughout South East Queensland during the post-war timber industry boom. The heritage-listed site retains its original boiler, steam engine, generator, control room, hopper and timber drying kilns, with many of the original belt drives and ventilation fans still in place.

Today, the kilns have a second life as the workshop of the Cooroora Woodworkers Club. Visitors can explore both the heritage precinct and the active workshop, seeing how this piece of Cooroy's industrial history continues to be used by local woodworkers.

Closed-in footwear is required for all visitors.

SUNSHINE COAST OPEN HOUSE celebrates architecture, design, and heritage.

Sunshine Coast Open House is a free community event which offers rare behind-the-scenes access to the Sunshine Coast’s best buildings ranging from private homes, corporate buildings, heritage treasures and sustainable spaces.

The next annual Sunshine Coast Open House event will run from 16-25 October 2026 with the What Is Home Forum kicking off on 16 October followed by an events weekend (17+18 October) and buildings weekend (24+25 October). It will showcase historic, contemporary and sustainable buildings from Caloundra to the Hinterland and Cooran under the 2026 theme of Sustainable Inclusive Design.

Sunshine Coast Open House was founded in 2017 by the Sunshine Coast Council, Noosa Council and the Australian Institute of Architects (Sunshine Coast Committee). Open House has received generous funding and in-kind support from the Sunshine Coast Council’s Arts and Heritage Levy and other government, corporate and community organisations. In its inaugural year, Sunshine Coast Open House celebrated the 50th anniversary of the official naming of the Sunshine Coast.

The Open House event has opened many architecturally diverse buildings each year for the public to tour. Sunshine Coast Open House also hosts a number of associated events, walking tours, and talks each year, including its annual Open Forum which focuses on topical, thought-provoking issues.
