2 Day workshop

Social Role Valorisation (SRV) helps to explain why people with disability are highly vulnerable to being excluded from everyday life.

This rich framework explores how people are marginalised, importantly it also offers strategies to address these processes and increase the chances of people with disabilities to belong to, and contribute in our community.

In this interactive workshop the core themes and principles of SRV will be explored through presentations and discussion.

The material covered explains some of the common negative experiences of individuals and families, especially that of rejection. While this can be hard to hear, the workshop is full of ideas and strategies to make positive strides towards better lives.

About the Presenters

Lindie Brengman has worked as an Occupational Therapist with children and adults and is currently a Senior Facilitator at CRU, working on the 'Families for Inclusive Education' project since it began in 2019. Through her own experience advocating for her daughter with disability, Lindie developed a passion for sharing the importance of an inclusive education, and was a founding member of the Queensland Collective for Inclusive Education. She as found SRV ideas extremely important in planning with her daughter. Lindie joined the SRV Educators Group and is working towards being an accredited SRV teacher so families and supporters of vulnerable people can continue to learn about SRV well into the future.

Danielle Mason was first exposed to SRV when working as a support worker for a small disability service in 2011 where she worked alongside people with significant disabilities living in a long-stay health facility. SRV has remained relevant and useful across a range of service settings and roles, as well as in her personal life. Danielle is now a Senior Facilitator at CRU, working with people with disability who want to live in a home of their own. She shares SRV ideas through workshops and mentoring, and uses SRV to guide the development of resources. Danielle is also President of the local SRV Group, Vales in Action Association and is a member of the SRV Educator Group, working towards becoming an accredited SRV trainer.

Jane Sherwin is delighted to support this workshop in a mentor role. She is a Senior Social Role Valorisation Trainer, having been involved in its teaching, learning and application since the early 1990s and is a past member of the Board of the Australian SRV Association (ASRVA). Jane has worked with families and services in the lives of people with disabilities and older people for many years, and through a range of roles. Jane is well regarded for her teaching, writing and facilitation work. She has taught SRV through accredited SRV workshops, longer courses and in shorter events. Jane has mentored soon-to-be accredited Teachers of SRV for the past 2.5 years.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop is being offered as a leadership development opportunity for people with disability and family members only. It is designed for people who are prepared to be challenged in their thinking, and are serious about working towards better lives for people with disability.

Learning Objectives

The objectives of the workshop are that each participant will:

note the patterns in our society that lead to some groups being devalued
identify negative life experiences that result from the dynamic of social devaluation
explore what is meant by ‘the good things of life’
understand the importance of ‘imagining better lives' in creating better lives
utilise the principle of ‘use culturally valued ways and means’ as a way of helping people have typical and valued lifestyles
appreciate the links between being in valued roles and people’s experiences of community life
understand the importance of role goals and role communicators
critique a range of visual examples to appreciate the impact of imagery
explore strategies that help people maintain and develop competencies
