TOWARDS A BETTER LIFE

An Exploration of the Social Role Valorisation (SRV) Framework with Regard to People who are Marginalised

A series of four online sessions 29 and 30 March & 5 and 6 April 2023. Participants must attend all four sessions.

ABOUT THIS ONLINE COURSE:

This online course teaches a framework for thinking when responding to the needs and interests of people who are at risk of being devalued. It will explore social devaluation and its consequences for people who are marginalised and how SRV can be used as a means of addressing those experiences of devaluation.

The course will inspire participants to imagine the good life and consider how we may support people who have been denied so many beneficial features of a good life, to have better lives and greater involvement in their communities through having valued roles.

The core themes and principles of SRV will be explored through presentations, exercises and discussions.

The SRV framework will help give meaning and depth to opportunities under NDIS and Consumer Directed Care. It underpins the application of Person-Centred Approaches and informs questions of Choice and Control.

Completion allows entry to the SRV practicum, PASSING.

Who is this workshop for?

The course is designed for participants from a range of sectors including disability, aged care, mental health, youth etc. This includes managers, support workers, coordinators, family members, people with disability, people with a mental illness, older people receiving services, advocates, students, and educators.

Participants attending should be looking for ways of meeting the real needs of marginalised people, resulting in a better life, and who are interested in understanding more about Social Role Valorisation.

About the Presenter

Jane Sherwin is an Accredited Teacher of SRV, having been involved in the teaching, learning and application of SRV since the early 1990s.Based as a consultant in Queensland, Jane has been involved in the lives of people with disabilities and older people since the late 1970s, in government and community services as an occupational therapist, manager, lecturer & organisational change manager.

Guest speakers will also contribute.

Dates and Times:

This online course is delivered over four sessions on Wednesday and Thursday.

Start times for Sessions 1 and 2 are Australian Eastern Daylight Time (AEDT) and for Sessions 3 and 4 start time is Australian Eastern Standard Time (AEST). This is due to Daylight Savings ending on Sunday 2 April 2023.

A reminder email will be sent prior to each session.

Session 1: 29 March 10.30am-2.30pm
Session 2: 30 March 10.30am-2.30pm
Session 3: 5 April 9.30am-1.30pm
Session 4: 6 April 9.30am-1.30pm

This online course will be delivered via ZOOM. A 30 min pre course session on how to use ZOOM is available, please let us know if this is something you would like to attend when registering.

IMPORTANT REQUIREMENTS - MAKE THE MOST OUT OF ONLINE LEARNING:

Attend all four sessions (required)
Undertake 1.5 hrs preparation (watch a video and do a pre-evaluation form) prior to session 1, and watch a ten minute video prior to session 3.
Have access to own computer, internet, video and microphone
Use a quiet room, free from distractions
Attend a pre-course tutorial if you are unfamiliar with zoom (included in ticket price)

This event is a prerequisite to PASSING

This course enables you to attend the SRV practicum, called PASSING. This five day course includes visits to two human services and the use of an evaluation tool based on SRV to understand the impact of each service on the lives of the people they serve.
