    Event description

Please join us for a training session designed for experienced prescribed burn practitioners, hosted by the Southern Wisconsin Bird Alliance in partnership with the Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council. Our goal for this training is to help prescribed fire leaders learn new skills in teaching the art and science of prescribed burning to colleagues, neighbors, and friends. We will do this through a short classroom presentation and then apply these concepts through live fire exercises. Our hope is that participants will obtain new skills in teaching our future prescribed fire practitioners and understand an old technique of ‘break burning’ (also called blacklining) that is underutilized in today's mechanized world.

Registration is free of charge and is required to attend this training.*

Required Experience: Registrants must have prescribed burn experience and interest in teaching others.

What to expect: Please come prepared for field work, wearing clothing composed of all natural fibers, all-leather boots and leather gloves. Depending on the temperature, you may want to bring a warm jacket and hat to put on between exercises. Be sure to bring your own bag dinner for the meal break. Nomex suits and hand tools will be provided. Registrants will be sent a short reading to complete prior to the training session.

This training session may be rescheduled to Saturday, September 21 if inclement weather is expected. Registrants will be notified of the confirmed training date one week in advance.

Primary Instructor: Jeb Barzen, Private Lands Conservation LLC, Wisconsin Prescribed Fire Council

*Note: In the event of a waitlist, priority will be given to those assisting with the WPFC's Private Landowner Training on September 28-29.
