Transition Town Vincent Movie Night - Anote's Ark
Event description
What if your country was swallowed by the sea? 🌊 🏝 🛶
The Pacific Island nation of Kiribati (population 100,000) is one of the most remote places on the planet, seemingly far-removed from the pressures of modern life. Yet it is one of the first countries that must confront the main existential dilemma of our time: imminent annihilation from sea-level rise.
This important documentary looks at the devastating effects that climate change has on the people living on this low-lying atoll.
With sweeping cinematography, Anote’s Ark interweaves two poignant stories. Anote Tong, endearing President of the island, races to find options — he advocates in international climate negotiations and investigates building underwater cities. At the same time, warm and sharp-witted Sermary, a young mother of six, tackles every struggle with humour. She must decide whether or not to uproot her family, leave her 4,000 year old culture behind and migrate to a new life in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
