Trauma Informed Culturally Safe Legal Practice

This practical training will explore the application of trauma-informed practice to client care within legal services, with a focus on culturally safe and responsive practice. Participants will consider how trauma and cultural experiences can affect behaviour, communication, decision-making and engagement with legal services. The presentation will also focus on and develop practical strategies for creating safer, more supportive and effective client interactions.

The training will introduce culturally safe service models and practical strategies for respectfully engaging with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients, including consideration of the impacts of colonisation and intergenerational trauma, the importance of trust and relationships, culturally respectful communication, and approaches that support clients to feel heard, respected and safe.

Participants will develop practical approaches that promote safety, trust, choice and empowerment while maintaining professional boundaries. The training will also consider the impact of trauma-related work on practitioners and the importance of sustainable practices that support practitioner wellbeing and effective client care. 

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

• Apply trauma-informed principles to legal practice – understand the key principles of trauma-informed practice and consider how they can be applied to client care and interactions within legal services.

• Recognise the impact of trauma and cultural experiences on client engagement – identify how trauma and cultural experiences may affect communication, behaviour, decision-making, trust and engagement with legal services.

• Implement culturally safe practice with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander clients – develop an understanding of the impacts of colonisation and intergenerational trauma and apply a model and strategies that promote culturally safe, respectful and responsive legal services.

• Develop effective strategies for working with clients – use practical approaches that promote safety, trust, choice and empowerment, while supporting clients to feel heard, respected and safe.

• Respond appropriately while maintaining professional boundaries – manage distressed, complex or emotionally heightened interactions in a trauma-informed and culturally responsive way, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries.

• Develop sustainable trauma-informed practice – recognise the impact of trauma-related work on practitioners and identify strategies to support professional resilience, boundaries and sustainable client care.
