Title: Trauma-Informed Schools: Responding to Student Behavior from a Trauma Informed Lens

Course Level: Beginner/Intermediate

Date: Friday, October 2nd from 12:00pm-1:30pm Eastern (11:00am-12:30 Central; 10:00am-11:30am Mountain; 9:00am-10:30am Pacific)

Location: Live, interactive synchronous webinar via Google Meet. Webinar link will be sent on Thursday, October 1st

Description: School personnel are often asked to respond to challenging student behavior in high-pressure moments. When traditional punitive or consequence-based approaches are used without considering what may be happening beneath the behavior, they can intensify a student’s stress response and contribute to further behavioral and relational difficulties. This course introduces a trauma-informed approach to understanding student behavior through the lens of the nervous system and regulation. Participants will learn how relational, attachment-based, and trauma-responsive strategies can support regulation, strengthen connection, and help school personnel respond more effectively to students experiencing distress.

Learning Objectives: After this course, participants will be able to :

Explain student behavior through the lens of nervous system regulation.
Describe how punitive, consequence-based discipline can unintentionally intensify challenging student behavior.
Identify relational, attachment-focused, and trauma-responsive strategies for responding to challenging student behavior.
Identify resources for continued learning about trauma-informed school practices.

Target Audience: Mental Health Therapists, School Counselors, Educators, School Administrators
