Treat Scoliosis - Melbourne

This two day workshop will provide a foundation of knowledge about the different types of scoliosis along with information about current conservative best practice for treatment: MFR delivered asymmetrically, Schroth Method and low-force joint mobilising techniques. There is also the necessary study of spinal mechanics - Fryettes’s Laws - and their significance in understanding what the underlying biomechanics of roto-scoliosis are. The bulk of the class however is concerned with learning how to apply MFR in a way that corresponds with the asymmetry unique to each patient. Finally, a number of easy to apply low force mobilising techniques will be introduced that help de-rotate vertebrae and restore whatever the available motion is to the associated facet joints.

Learners in the class will be given guidelines for developing realistic outcomes for their patients which frequently involves providing periodic maintenance sessions in a multi- disciplinary team.

MFR for:

Most of the MFR will be to the trunk — obliques, rectus, pecs, spinal erectors, broad back muscles and intrinsic spinal muscles. There is some work around the pelvic and C-Spine areas.

Joint mobilising:

Using the language of Dr Fryette, there will be assessment for vertebrae that are locked in Type II fixation (laterally flexed and rotated to the same side) in the lumbar and thoracic spines (where all vertebrae should behave as Type I - laterally flexed and rotated to the opposite side). These fixations are always present in scoliosis, usually at the zone of transition from one curve to the next. The approaches to release are all low force and utilise a combination of patient movement and therapist created fulcrums for rotation.

Positional Strategies:

Once spinal biomechanics are understood then the therapist is able to precisely position their patients so as to increase the de-rotation of whole segments of the spine and increase length on the side of the concavity.

Presenter: Michael Stanborough

Michael Stanborough, MA, Advanced Rolfer, has taught Myofascial Release at numerous schools, hospitals and clinics in the USA, Korea, Singapore, New Zealand, Canada, Japan, Puerto Rico, Australia and Africa. He was the first Australian to be certified as a teacher of Rolfing® by the Rolf Institute and has been practicing that method for over 35 years. Michael is director of SI Australia. His classes blend new information on the physiology of fasciae with lively presentations of techniques that are immediately relevant to practising therapists.

Cancellation: If it is deemed that a seminar is not viable, it may be postponed or cancelled by ATMS.

Please note that it is not permissible to bring children to ATMS seminars.
