Rochelle and Russell want to help New Zealand lead the way to a brighter food future, one bite at a time. With mushrooms?... Yes! With mushrooms!

With over 30 years of hospitality experience, they are proud to produce delicious oyster mushrooms and oyster mushroom products every week. Not only are they plentiful, but they're seriously tasty too!

Exploring various Pacific Islands, Rochelle couldn't help but notice a significant need for urban farming initiatives in New Zealand. Among these travels, her journey to the Philippines with the Asian New Zealand Foundation stands out vividly. It was there that she first encountered a delectable packet of crispy mushroom chips, igniting a desire to bring such delights to New Zealand. Yet, upon delving into the logistics, importing them proved impractical due to cost constraints. Undeterred, she embarked on a journey of self-teaching, determined to master the art of mushroom cultivation.

Joined by her husband Russell, their mushroom-growing endeavor commenced in the warmth and humidity of their own bathroom, serving as their initial testing ground, and they have expanded their operations into The Mushroom House in Plimmerton.

Ration Creek Orchard

Grab your baskets because apple season is upon us and Philip from Ration Creek Orchard has kindly offered to host us for a talk and a walk around the orchard.

With five different delicious variants to choose from, pack your sunscreen and a picnic and make a day of strolling through orchards, nibbling on crispy apples plucked straight from the trees.

Ration Creek Orchard is located at 119 Paekakariki Hill Road, Porirua

What to bring:

Your lunch and a drink. Please note that tea/coffee facilities are not available.
Wallet for purchasing some delicious Mushroom Chips and/or Freshly picked Apples
Sturdy and protective shoes, and remember your hat and sunblock.

Programme:

10:30 am Arrive and register at The Mushroom House

10.30am: Start the Mushroom House tour

11:15am: Mushroom tasting

12.00pm Picnic at Ration Creek - BYO lunch

1:00pm: Orchard Talk with Philip Reidy

1.30pm: Orchard walk and PYO apples

Note: Toilets are not available at either locations. There are public toilets in Plimmerton Park and Pauatahanui (Village centre).
