Tremendum, Part 1: Inchoate Field

‘Tremendum’ refers to the fearful or awe-evoking side of encountering the divine or something wholly other — a sense of being overwhelmed by something vast, powerful, and beyond human comprehension. This new multi-modal dance work contemplates the arc from Sunrise into Twilight/Nightfall into Sunrise, unfolding on stage as a living landscape that culminates in the Elysian fields — a vision of afterlife. 

Inspired by Baroque, Romanticism and Renaissance fine art masterpieces and the elemental forces of nature, Tremendum asks: can our shadow-selves be transformed into new energies? Does infinite essence lie dormant within us, awaiting activation? Historical tableaux are re-imagined through contemporary movement, music and lighting design, inviting audiences to feel how these images resonate in the body. Do images from the past stir concealed truths within us now?

Tremendum is an embodiment of polyphony:  lighting, sound, costume, visual art and choreography exist in equal counterpoint, with each element conversing rather than accompanying. No single element seeks dominance; instead, a living dialogue emerges. Viewers are invited to wander through layers of detail — to perceive the minute and the monumental — and to compose their own narrative within the unfolding landscape.

Is this a dance? A painting made temporal? A spiritual threshold? As when watching dawn break, or waves meeting stone, allow Tremendum to summon the awe within!
