A dynamic program with three entertaining and approachable pieces for this perfectly matched combination of instruments.

Two former National Presidents of the Australasian Double Reed (oboe and bassoon) Society, Celia and Mark were Principal players together in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra for nearly a decade and continue their collaboration through chamber music with Michael Ierace, including for Musica Viva Australia.

Today's programme showcases the music that will be presented in Thailand at the worldwide, International Double Reed Society Conference 2023 in Bangkok, where this Trio will represent South Australia.

The Music:

Commissioned by Judy Hargrave as a birthday gift for her husband Roderick Shire in January 2022, Trio Fantastique is a three movement work for Oboe, Bassoon and Piano composed by Joe Chindamo.

Each movement is built on a distinct dance form: an exotic Tango, sensuous Waltz and ebullient Tarantella. The first two of these are poignant because they are performed exclusively by couples. In fact, such is the association of the waltz with coupledom, for instance , that it has long been the perennial dance of choice for newlyweds. The third, on the other hand, is a celebratory communal dance, where all are welcome.

As a whole, the piece evokes flashes of nightly Parisian life, reminiscent of La Belle Epoch.

Highlighting the French connection further, the choice of oboe and bassoon was inspired by the legacy of woodwind performance pioneered by the Conservatoire National de Musique in Paris as exemplified in Poulenc’s 1926 Trio for the same combination.

The performers giving this first performance, Celia Craig and Mark Gaydon, are linked through both having served as President of the Australasian Double Reed Society.

The title pays tribute to one of France's most iconoclastic composers and masterful orchestrators, Hector Berlioz, whose Symphonie Fantastique is still one of the most impressive orchestral works ever composed.

Katia Beaugeais is an award-winning Australian-French composer and saxophonist. She is an ABC Classics, Vandoren Paris + Selmer Sax Artist.

Terra Australis Incognita portrays the search, exploration and mystery of the imaginary continent ‘Terra Australis Incognita’ (“unknown land of the South”) that appeared on European maps from the 15th to 18th Century.

Atmospheric contemporary playing techniques such as soothing multiphonics, wide vibrato, quarter-tone trill effects and bird-like sounds represent the sounds of nature and landscape of Australia.

Both her saxophone and string orchestra music are currently the theme music for ABC New Waves and ABC Classic Breakfast radio.

With a unique repertoire ranging from solo saxophone to full orchestra, Beaugeais’ music has been performed and broadcast throughout Europe, UK, America, Canada, Asia, Peru, Australia and New Zealand.
