    Event description

    Truth Listening Glover Country

Join Reconciliation Tasmania for our third Truth Listening Glover Country, a rare experience with special guests.

    When: Friday December 6, 11am-2:30pm

Where: Glover Country, Patterdale - 173 Uplands Rd, Deddington

What: Tour of Glover’s studio, house, painting sites, lunch & refreshments

    John Glover
is often referred to as the father of Australian landscape painting. Born in England, he left his successful career to arrive in Van Diemen’s Land in 1831 where he lived up until his death in 1849. Glover was enthusiastic about the light and the strange plants found in Tasmania; particularly at Patterdale and the Nile River at Deddington. He was also very aware of Aboriginal presence on this land, creating a number of imagined scenes of peaceful pre-colonial times.

On Glover Country we will hear from current owner Carol Westmore who has painstakingly restored the residence, studio and garden. She will provide a tour with author and art expert Jane Deeth, the inaugural curator of the Glover Prize, who carried out that role for 14 years. The famous Tasmanian art prize is now in its 21st year.

Lunch, tea and coffee will follow.

After lunch special guest and one of Tasmania’s most well-known art historians, curators, essayists and commentators on Indigenous identity and place, Professor Greg Lehman from the University of Tasmania will guide the latter part of the day. Greg is a descendent of the trawulwuy people of north east Tasmania.

    Directions

Glover Country, Patterdale, is just south of Evandale. If coming from the north, drive through Evandale south east to the Nile. Just after the Nile turn left onto C420, Deddington Rd (around 40mins). Deddington is the closest town to Patterdale – Glover’s Residence – and around here you will lose reception. Just past Deddington turn right at the small sign that says Glover Country, onto Uplands Rd. Drive slowly on the dirt road and not far along on the left, after some more paddocks is the driveway to the residence (drive past the first house you see as that is a workers cottage). Park in the paddock on the right and stroll down to the house.

If coming from the south turn right after Conara onto route C416, Glen Esk Rd. After travelling through on this curvy farmland, turn right again before the Nile onto C420, Deddington Rd. Allow 2.5hrs.

Wear sturdy shoes for walking, and appropriate clothing, including a hat and sunscreen. And once past Deddington there is no mobile signal so it's a good idea to screenshot the map.
