Try-Out-Paddling Ad Hoc Session
Description
This is an event listing for ad hoc introductory sessions led by FCC coaches / instructors.
This is a safe and fun introduction to canoes/kayaks/paddleboards with a coach / instructor. This particular event is by invite only, but we do run open sessions April to October. Please see individual event listings for these.
See the FAQs for directions to the club, what to bring and more.
Who is this event for?
This is at the discretion of the coach / instructor but these sessions tend to be suitable for complete beginners as well as anyone who has paddled before and want to get back into watersport activities. Again at the discretion of the coach / instructor, kids 8-15 years of age may attend if accompanied by an adult.
FAQs
- What shall I bring?
Warm clothes and a change of dry clothes! Depending on the weather this could include a fleece, warm t-shirt/thermal, tracksuit trousers, waterproof trousers, cagoule/windproof, hat and towel. We encourage you to wear footwear, plimsolls or wet-shoes are ideal.
There are changing rooms & a toilet available during this time. We strongly recommend a change of clothes because, although most people are pretty stable in the boats, there is always the chance of falling in and you are likely to get splashed a few times.
- Where is the boathouse?
The nearest postcode is EH11 1LU. Enter through the blue gate in the wall beside the canal bridge and descend some steep steps.
Note that Harrison Road is closed to traffic and pedestrians near the Ardmillan Terrace end. If coming from the north (e.g. from Haymarket direction) you have to find a way around. We suggest using Dundee Terrace / West Bryson Road or Ashley Terrace / Harrison Gardens.

- I can't manage this date: will you be holding more sessions like this?
Yes! We'll have about 2 open nights, or "try it out" sessions per month April to October. Follow us on Humanitix to make sure you hear as soon as bookings are available: https://events.humanitix.com/host/forth-canoe-club
- Can we share a boat?
We have some 2-person canoes and if you'd like to share you are more than welcome to use one of them.
- I have another question, who can I contact?
After you have booked, if you have any questions about the event or about the club in general, please contact Alan (course.admin@forthcanoeclub.co.uk). If he can't answer your question he may pass it to the coach running the event or to another committee member.
- What data do you keep?
Forth Canoe Club will keep a record of members’ names and addresses and contact details on a computer accessible to the Forth Canoe Club Committee. This includes your in-case-of-emergency contact details.
Your record may be inspected by contacting the Membership Secretary. We are affiliated to the SCA and will pass on your data for insurance and membership statistics use. By signing up this course, you are agreeing for Forth Canoe Club to use your contact data in this way if necessary.
- Do I need to let you know about medical conditions?
During the check-out questions, you will be asked about medical conditions that might affect your paddling and you'd like the coach to know about. Although this question is optional (you can enter "none") do let us know if there is anything we should know about to help give you the best and safest paddling experience.
Any medical details will be shared with the coach / instructor leading the event and may be visible to other committee members. If you prefer to give medical details only to the coach / instructor you may do so by email or verbally at the start of the event.
