Presenter: Dr Wendy Maddocks (Reg Nurse), Senior Lecturer Faculty of Health Canterbury University
Inspired by a visit to Lemnos, Greece in 2015 on an ANZAC nurses' tour and learning about the conditions nurses worked under, Wendy started, during lockdown, researching the history of her old training school (Palmerston North Hospital). Through this research she discovered sad stories of nurses who served in WW1 which has led her on a journey to dive deeper into their experiences and health through their service. Wendy is currently collating all the medical information relating to the nurses and a summary of this will be talked about plus context around how the nurses were treated. She is also writing up the diary and a book related to the experiences of one of the nurses she discovered.
These women were resilient and worked in extremely difficult conditions and for a long time their voice was not heard in public recognitions. Wendy is trying to redress this balance.
