Come and learn to draw and paint plein air in Balnarring
An immersive and experiential small group offering for beginners to experienced learners, with Sarah Bell (BA Fine Arts, Dip. Ed)
4 x Twilight Tuesdays in March
5th, 12th, 19th and 26th March
Time: 5.30pm-7.30pm
Learn with artist and art educator, Sarah Bell (BA Fine Arts, Dip. Ed)
Twilight is often known as ‘the golden hour’ by landscape painters and is a wonderful time to be outside. Each week we will visit a different nearby location. Skills explored will be drawing, colour mixing (with watercolours and gouache), composition, brush control, mark making and observation.
Week One, Balnarring Beach - Where to Begin. Recording, observing the landscape, ways of representing scenery through mark making.
Meet at the Rotunda in the Balnarring beach Carpark for a demo/discussion and then walk or drive to nearby location to paint. Enter carpark immediately left of the Tulum Store Balnarring Beach.
Week Two, Balbirooroo Community Wetlands - Observing Colour in the golden hour. Applying watercolours and colour palette mixing and selection.
Meet at the wetlands gate at the end of Civic Court, Balnarring. Use google Maps and enter 'Balbirooroo Community Wetlands.'
Week Three, Balbirooroo Community Wetlands - Brush Skills -Mark making and it’s role in composition, variety and interest, also rhythm and movement

Week Four, Balbirooroo Community Wetlands - Composition and design elements considerations such as balance, range of marks and and tonal contrast.

We will paint light rain or shine, including under cover places. You will be texted and emailed if rescheduled or location changes.
Materials -What to buy/bring
Walking Shoes - we may drive and then have a short walk to nearby vistas.
Small folding stool - optional but recommended
Essential is a small backpack with:
- Pencil
- To set up with a basic kit - see my list links below to the Art Shed Online:
- Gouache or watercolours in tubes such as these here
- A4 size 200-300gsm watercolour pad x 2
- Range of small brushes such as this set
- Sarah’s favourite and recommended ‘mop’ brush can be bought here
- Include a ‘round’ pointed brush size Size 4-6 and flat brush, sizes 10-15. Sarah will bring extra so no stress!
- Small lightweight drawing board - stiff cardboard is fine.

- Small water bottle and old china mug for brush cleaning
- Sponge or paper towel
- Old tea towel to wrap brushes
- Palette. Ice cream lids or plastic plate will do but if you want to go fancy this looks good.
- foldback or bulldog clip -or tape (for windy weather)
