Twitches Trail Learn to Bird Watch

This event forms part of the Twitchers Trail Stage 2, supported by the Eyre Peninsula Landscape Board’s Grassroot Grants program, made possible by the regional landscape levy.

About the Event
Join us for a relaxed day exploring the birds and habitats of the Lipson, Ungarra and Moody Tanks districts as part of the Twitches Trail Stage 2 project. Suitable for beginners and experienced birdwatchers alike, the day will provide opportunities to learn bird identification skills, discover local habitats and connect with fellow nature enthusiasts.

Guided by Tim from Australian Coastal Safaris, participants will visit a range of birdwatching locations while learning about the diverse birdlife found throughout the region. The event forms part of the broader Twitches Trail extension project, which aims to strengthen community awareness of local biodiversity and encourage appreciation of the habitats that support native bird species, with further community bird mosaics planned for 2027.

Event Overview

Participants are welcome to join the full day program or attend selected sessions.

Session 1: Lipson

• 9:30am - 10:50am

• 9:30 start at Lipson Hall, then moving onto surrounding birdwatching locations

• Includes welcome, introduction to birdwatching, morning tea and a guided birdwatching walk.

Session 2: Ungarra & Moody Tanks

• 11:30am - 1:30pm

• 11:30 start at Ungarra Primary School, followed by a trip to Moody Tanks

• Includes a birdwatching information session, lunch and guided birdwatching at Moody Tanks.

Transport & Return

• Participants attending the full day program can travel between locations with the group on the Community Bus.

• Participants may also choose to join at Lipson Hall or Ungarra Primary School and attend the relevant session(s) via their own transport.

• The event concludes at Moody tanks at approximately 1:30pm and will arrive back to Tumby Bay by 2:15pm, with return transport available to designated pick-up locations.

• Weather-appropriate clothing

• Insect repellent (recommended)

• Any personal medications

Community Bus Transport

Limited seats may be available on the District Council of Tumby Bay Community Bus. If you require transport, please indicate this during registration.

Pick-up locations include:

Tumby Bay Travellers Rest

• Participants will travel for the full day program.

• Return transport to Tumby Bay will be provided at the conclusion of the event.

Lipson Hall

• Participants will join the Lipson, Ungarra and Moody Tanks components of the program.

• Return transport to Lipson Hall will be provided.

Ungarra Primary School

• Participants will join the Ungarra and Moody Tanks components of the program.

• Return transport to Ungarra Primary School will be provided.

Accessibility & Mobility

This event includes short walks over uneven natural surfaces. Participants with mobility concerns are encouraged to contact organisers prior to registration to discuss suitability and available options. There will be opportunities to participate in parts of the program without undertaking all walks.
