The Peninsula Bushwalking Club invites you to join them on an explore of the Green Bush Figure 8 Section of Two Bays Walking Track on the Mornington Peninsula. This walk is part of the Try Bushwalking Month, celebrating the 90th Anniversary of Bushwalking Victoria, the peak body representing 60+ bushwalking clubs across Victoria.

This walk is a 16 km figure eight loop on part of the Two Bays Walking Track and surrounding tracks with some walking on a track beside Rogers Road. This is a good trail to get into longer walks and stretch our legs. We visit Lightwood campground twice where the two circuits meet on the figure eight but other than that we don’t repeat the loops. There are benches and a toilet at the Lightwood campground, where we lunch. There is tank-water for hand washing not recommended for drinking.

DISTANCE: 16.5km: Two intersecting loop walks that will take 4 to 5 hours including morning tea and lunch. There is a shorter option for beginners.

WHO IS THIS WALK FOR? Walkers with a medium level of fitness will like this track. Beginners can do the first loop and leave the walk after that as the Lightwood campground is reasonably close to the place where we park the cars. We will take you back to your car.

CHILDREN AND PETS: This walk is for adults 18 years and over, and due to the nature of the walk, we ask you to leave dogs and other pets at home. Please contact the club directly to inquire about service animals, and any family or pet friendly walks.

AWT GRADE 4 (Medium): Suitable for most ages and fitness levels. Grade 4 tracks may have some steep sections, a rough surface and steps. Walks up to 20km. Bushwalking experience is recommended. Tracks generally good, some parts are narrow, but not rough with a few steep sections. Directional signage is not always available. But this is generally a good walking track. AWT Grade information.

PACE: Average 4 to 5km/hour

TOTAL ASCENT: 323 metres overall gain, easy climb, some steps.

WALK DESCRIPTION:

The Two Bays Walking Track transverses the Mornington Peninsula from Dromana on Port Phillip Bay to Cape Schanck on the Bass Strait. It is the longest trail on the Mornington Peninsula. This walk does not do the full Two Bays track but encompasses the main forested area after the Arthurs Seat State Park. And this walk does not have mountain or trail bikes on it. There is a lot of nature to be seen and the grass tree woodlands are a rare and marvellous sight. A part of this State Park was purchased from farmers in the 1980’s to complete the cross-Peninsula trail. It is interesting to see the flora and fauna recovering. Wildflowers should be out. In summer there may be kangaroos and Swamp Wallabies, particularly at Lightwood campground. Do not feed them, they can get stroppy when you stop feeding and they can be dangerous.

MEETING POINT: Rogers Road off Patterson Road, Boneo. See directions.

DIRECTIONS: Allow two hours driving from Melbourne (longer from northern or western suburbs). Get on to Peninsula Link (M11) and travel until it ends on the outskirts of Rosebud township. Then turn left at the roundabout into Boneo Road (C777), travel 7.5 km along Boneo Road to Patterson Road on your left. Travel 2.8km along Patterson Road until it ends then turn right into Rogers Road, travel 350m until the gate at the start of Link Break off Rogers Road. CARPOOLING/PUBLIC TRANSPORT: Train and bus service are not really practical as they would not get you to Boneo before the start time. But contact the leaders and they will see what can be arranged.

PHONE SIGNAL: Available at the start of Patterson Road but may be out of range for some of the walk.

TOILETS: At Lightwood campground, we visit here twice.

ABOUT OUR CLUB: The Peninsula Bushwalking Club is based on the Mornington Peninsula. We have around 100 members and offer a variety of walks on weekends as well as mid-week, both on the Mornington Peninsula and further afield, generally within a 90-minute drive from Mornington. Walks are often followed by a cafe visit, where one is available nearby. We also offer bike rides, including e bikes, as well as multi-day base camps and back packs from time to time, catering for more experienced hikers, as well as those newer to hiking.
