Tyaan Singh - Imaginary Friends (Wellington Jazz Festival)
Event description
- Very Brief Description -
Fairies, forests, a full moon, silhouettes of old spirits. A surreal landscape with jazz and classical influences.
- Much Longer Description -
Hi everyone, I wrote and recorded all of this music for an album. The album won't be released until later this year, but you can come and witness the first public performance of the music at this gig.I'll be joined by some of my favourite musicians, Louisa Williamson on saxophone, Hayden Afele-Nickel on Violin, Callum Allardice on guitar, Seth Boy on bass, and Shaun Anderson on drums.
The idea for Imaginary Friends came about because I wanted to find a way to make writing music more therapeutic and fun. The writing process involved defining some of the characters of my internal world and writing a song for each of them. The music leans into feelings of immersion and surreality, with a decent portion of drama and a little bit of comedy. The composition draws from a wide range of influences including some small group jazz like Kenny Garret Trio and Marcus Strickland Trio, and some of my favourite orchestral and string quartet music from Ravel and Debussy.
Huge thanks to the people at 13 Garret Street for hosting this gig in their community space! You can find the entrance across the road from Rogue and Vagabond, and head up the stairs to the big front room.
Looking forward to seeing you there, this is going to be funÂ
