Event description

Sydney indie band Ultracrush play Franks Wild Years in Thirroul after releasing their debut EP 'On Your Return', with support from Bridge Dog

On Your Return opens with its title track, a fast, midwestern emo-inspired cut of arpeggiated and interwoven guitars. At just 55 seconds in length, it sets the scene for the tightly-written guitar pop found across the EP. Unfettered by a single sonic direction, Ultracrush dive into walls of sound on the shoegaze-inspired “Cracks”, swinging rhythms on alt-country “Bruise”, and slowcore soundscapes on “Heat”, the EP’s six-minute closer featuring guest vocals from Ella Mosley (aka Hubcaps). The songs on On Your Return are tied together by a common introspective outlook, direct songwriting, and a few recurring themes: ruminations on failed relationships, lost friendships, miscommunication, and an evolving sense of self.

Mixed by Aria-nominated producer Simon Lam (Cub Sport, Phoebe Go, Juice Webster) and member of projects Armlock and Kllo, On Your Return sees the band achieve a newfound sonic precision and vulnerability, providing the perfect platform for frontman Lewis Demertzi’s image-rich streams of thought. Known for their compelling live performances, Ultracrush have supported acts such as Crumb, Girlpool and Hatchie.
