Led by the talented Leah Sawkins, a passionate paper artist and member of the Paper Meddling Club, this course will guide you through the expressive and experimental world of junk journalling.
Using repurposed papers, vintage ephemera, fabrics, paints, and embellishments, you’ll create a truly unique journal—whether it’s for storytelling, collaging, memory-keeping, or pure creative exploration. Over eight weeks, you’ll transform an old book into a beautiful handmade journal and experiment with a variety of mixed-media techniques to fill its pages with creativity.
Course Breakdown:
🛠 Weeks 1 & 2: Setting the Foundation
- Learn how to rebind a recycled book and transform it into a blank canvas for your junk journal.
- Explore creative binding methods and prepare your pages for layering and decoration.
🎨 Weeks 3 & 4: Creative Techniques & Journal Development
Each week, you’ll discover and apply a new technique to your personal junk journal, including:
- Collage & Layering – Blending textures, ephemera, and paint for a rich, dimensional effect.
- Aging & Distressing – Giving pages a vintage, well-worn look using inks, tea stains, and more.
- Pocket & Flip Elements – Adding hidden spaces, envelopes, and interactive features.
- Personalisation & Final Touches – Bringing all the elements together to craft a cohesive, meaningful journal.
