The cooperative is hosting its first annual conference, gathering together scholars and the theologically curious to question and explore the place of public theology on colonised lands. The conference will frame these focus areas broadly and creatively, welcoming approaches that disturb boundaries and think with and beyond the public of public theology.

Keynote speakers

Anne Pattel-Gray

Anne Pattel-Gray has an earned Ph.D. from the University of Sydney awarded in 1995 in the Studies of Religion with the major focus on Aboriginal Religion and Spirituality (she was the first Aboriginal person to graduate with a Ph.D. from the University of Sydney). And a Doctor of Divinity from India awarded in 1997 (the first Aboriginal person to be awarded the D.D.). Dr. Pattel-Gray has achieved many firsts in her prestigious life, and she is known as a trailblazer and she has opened many doors for her people. She is a recognised scholar, theologian, activist and prolific writer with several publications – chapters, articles, edited works and authored books. Dr. Anne Pattel-Gray is deeply committed to the advancement of Aboriginal people and to reconciliation between Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal Australians. She has over thirty years in senior management as a CEO and she possesses a wealth of experience and she has developed enormous expertise. 


Monica Jyotsna Melanchthon

    Monica Jyotsna Melanchthon is a church worker, theological educator and an ordained minister of the Andhra Evangelical Lutheran Church, India. A graduate of the United Theological College, Bangalore, India, and the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago, USA, she has been teaching Hebrew Bible/Old Testament studies at the Pilgrim Theological College, University of Divinity, Melbourne, since June 2012. A contextual theologian and feminist, she has strong commitments to the issues and experiences of the minoritized, especially women, Dalits, and the earth. She draws on insights from their social biographies and lived experiences to interpret the biblical text. She has published various academic books focusing primarily on interpretations of OT texts from the perspective of the Indian context and the marginalized.


    Jione Havea

      Jione Havea is co-parent for an active and talkative 6yo, migrant to the Wurundjeri land of the Kulin Nations, native pastor (Methodist Church in Tonga) and research fellow with Trinity Methodist Theological College (Aotearoa New Zealand) and with Public and Contextual Theology research centre (Charles Sturt University, Australia). Jione authored Losing Ground: Reading Ruth in the Pacific (2021) and edited Christian and Native Theologies from the Pacific (2021).

      Along with the main paper sessions, two specific sessions will run concurrently on political theology and public theology and art.

      Friday, September 16: 6pm-9pm

      Saturday, September 17: 9am – 9pm (includes dinner)

      Sunday, September 18: 10.30am-3pm


      Registration costs

      • Registration (after August 1, 2022): $250
      • Day registration (Saturday only): $150

      Conference dinner is included in all the registrations above.

      Zoom Registration: $50 (please note zoom sessions will be in the main room only and will include all keynote speakers and papers presented in the main room). If you register for Zoom, you will be able to watch live and also access videos of all the main room presentations on Monday 19 September to watch at your leisure.
