Diversity is reality but inclusion is a choice. Diversity is all around us but we decide as leaders whether or not to make full use of diversity around us. Inclusive leaders listen, observe and learn from people.

In this workshop, Diversity Australia will take you through a hybrid session on Unconscious Bias and Inclusive Language.

Unconscious Bias
Fundamental to diminishing the impacts of Unconscious Bias we look at participants and a program for them to first acknowledge that it exists in individuals and establish when, where and how it affects their business decision environment.

Inclusive Language
Language is powerful. Language can consciously or unconsciously offend, intimidate, exclude and contribute to the unequal status of individuals. Language can also have very positive effects on people. When inclusive language is used it can make people feel included, valued and empowered. This is about creating a people-centric inclusive language which values and respects the diversity of people, and sees people as people – not as a stereotype, attribute or characteristic.

The session is designed to enable participants to do the following:

Understand what Unconscious Bias is and acknowledge that they have them as well as recognising the importance of inclusion as a solution
Examining their own background and identities, so that participants can interact more authentically with volunteers, co-workers and all stakeholders.
Examine how to recognise when Unconscious Bias is impacting decision making processes of self and others.
Examine participants own internal biases so that they can practice conscious awareness in their lives and within their work environment.
Develop action plans to mitigate negative impacts of Unconscious Bias for individuals and across the organisation
Develop and practice strategies and tools so that participants can recognise when Unconscious Bias is impacting on self and others and develop action plans to minimise negative impacts.
Recognise that inclusive language is language that is respectful and promotes the acceptance and value of all people. It is language which is free from words, phrases or tones that demean, insult, exclude, stereotype, infantilise or trivialise people on the basis of their membership of a certain group or because of a particular attribute.
Raise awareness and educate leaders and people about inclusive language in an engaging and practical way is fundamental to prevent issues occurring in the workplace.
Understanding that language is dynamic and fluid and the meaning and connotations of words can change rapidly. It is important that you apply the inclusive language principles, rather than learning specific appropriate phrases, as these may change over time
