Event description

Underground Philosophy is where thought comes to life. The Museum of Consciousness creates interactive, audio-based exhibits for cultivating altered states of consciousness. On the 21st, we invite you to participate with the question: are we human yet?

Returning Sunday Evening September 21st at The Grace Darling

You are invited to dinner, philosophical conversation, and intentional listening to transformative sonic experiences.

Our topic is Are We Human Yet?

Building on dialogues featuring Carl Hayden Smith on the Voicecraft podcast, we will explore this question through multiple frames of reference -- artistic, musical, philosophical, psychological, in addition to the concept of Hyperhumanism.

Hyperhumanism can be seen as an alternative to transhumanism. Hyperhumanism asks us to consider how we can deepen and enrich experience through the mindful use of technology, while in some circles, transhumanism promises 'transcendence' as an escape from the lack in humanity.

Carl Hayden Smith is Associate Professor of Media in the School of Arts & Creative Industries at UEL and is the former Head of Research and Director of the Learning Technology Research Centre (LTRC) at the Institute for Creativity & Technology, Ravensbourne University London. His research focuses broadly on the relationship between technology and the human condition. Carl is developing ‘Hyperhumanism’ which reframes technology as a catalyst for developing our own innate human abilities. His other research interests include Embodied Cognition, Spatial Literacy, Context Engineering, Umwelt Hacking, Natural Media, Sensory Augmentation, Extended Senses and Embodiment.
