Description

Our world is ever changing. What was true yesterday, has evolved today, and so has the diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. It is imperative to understand the different layers to the diagnosis, as well as common associated co-morbid conditions, so that we can support all learners to the best of their capabilities, and help them, using a multi-faceted treatment approach to care, so that their unique abilities and talents can flourish. Participants will have more in-depth knowledge of ASD and the associated common co-morbid conditions, while gaining key strategies to use, when working with clients with unique profiles.

Learning Objectives:

1. Understanding the current diagnostic criteria for those with ASD

2. Understanding what co-morbidity is

3. Understanding the common conditions associated with ASD

4. Exploring ASD with different subsequent diagnoses attached, and other considerations needed for care

5. Exploring example case studies for extending knowledge

6. Putting all of this knowledge together, and formulating a plan for care

7. Working with our community of care for coordination of care

8. Understanding how best to maximize services/care provided

Executive Functioning skills comprise of key processes to enable us all towards independent, purposeful, goal-directed behavior. These skills are the foundation for life-long functioning. Many individuals with neurodiversity, and diagnoses of autism spectrum disorder and/or attention deficit disorder, for example, experience difficulties with these skills. It is vital for us to support and teach these essential skills, starting at a young age, to build skills and the fluency of those skills, for clients to lead lives as independently as possible. It will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of Executive Functioning skills, and how to support the learning of those skills across the years.

1. Understanding what Executive Function is, and what Executive Functioning Skills represent

2. Understanding why Executive Functioning Skills are considered primary functions

3. Gaining a deeper meaning for what Dysfunction looks like

4. Learning what assessments/tools exist for us to assess these skills

5. Understanding key successful strategies for intervention
