Understanding autism and effective strategies for Secondary Teachers:

Professional Development Workshop

This is a General Workshop that has been developed for Secondary Teachers who want a better understanding of autism and a range of effective strategies to support students on the autism spectrum.

The session acknowledges that the high school journey is very different to that of the primary school journey. The skills and attitudes developed in high school will set a foundation for post school opportunities, making support in the high school years so important. The session has been developed by an experienced Autism Consultant who has

extensive experience working as a high school teacher and will give educators the knowledge and practical skills to effectively support students on the spectrum at high school.

Topics include:

• Understanding autism;

• The Learner Profile of students on the spectrum;

• Organisation and self-management strategies;

• Effectively differentiating the curriculum;

• Enhancing communication;

• Supporting social interaction and social conflict;

• Positive behaviour strategies; and

• Understanding sensory processing and the impact on the student.

Suitable for professionals supporting ages approx. 11-19 years.

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

Workshop Definitions:

General Workshops are designed to give participants a better understanding of autism. They present a broad range of effective strategies that participants can use to improve their practice when working with individuals on the spectrum. These workshops are suited to participants who have not attended previous Autism SA workshops.

In Focus Workshops are designed for participants who have a good general knowledge and understanding of autism. These sessions are for those wanting to enhance their professional practice by developing skills to support individuals in specific areas relating to autism. It is recommended that participants first attend a General Workshop prior to attending an In Focus Workshop.

Autism SA has a highly experienced and diverse training team which includes consultants, occupational therapists, speech pathologists and facilitators who have extensive experience in working with individuals on the autism spectrum in a range of settings.
