Understanding autism and effective strategies to support in the OSHC setting

Professional Development General Workshop

This session has been developed for staff who work in Out of School Hours Care (OSHC) settings (including before and after school and vacation care) who want a better understanding of autism and want a broad range of effective strategies to use when supporting students on the spectrum.

This workshop will increase participants’ knowledge, understanding and skills when supporting individuals on the spectrum. The session also provides an opportunity to develop professional skills and networks.

The presenter will cover a range of topics specifically relevant to the OSHC setting including:

Understanding the autism spectrum and what this looks/sounds like in the OSHC setting;
Setting up the environment, rules, and routines;
How to effectively communicate;
Supporting peer relations and inclusion;
Behaviour Management Strategies specifically for the OSHC setting;
How to support regulating; and
‘In the moment’ strategies.

Suitable for professionals supporting individuals aged 5-12.

All participants will receive a certificate with the workshop title, the number of hours and will state that the training links to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (where appropriate).

Professional Workshops are designed for any individuals who support an individual on the autism spectrum on a professional or volunteer basis. The workshops provide examples and strategies that are relevant for professionals.

Workshop Definitions:

GENERAL WORKSHOPS are designed to give participants an introductory understanding of the autism spectrum and provide key strategies to support individuals in a range of settings. This is achieved through facilitation of information, videos content, activities and discussion. It is recommended that participants attend an Autism SA General Workshops prior to attending an Autism SA In-Focus Workshop or Masterclass unless they have a good, current understanding of the autism spectrum.

IN FOCUS WORKSHOPS are designed for participants that have a good, current understanding of autism that what a more in-depth knowledge and understanding relating to a particular area of the autism field and greater confidence in applying strategies to support individuals in this area. This is achieved through facilitation of information, video content, activities and discussion.

MASTERCLASSES are short intensive workshops that are designed to provide participants that already have a good, current understanding of autism with specific content relating to a particular topic, strategy or program. This is achieved through facilitation of information, video content, activities and discussion.
