If you support people affected by hoarding or environmental neglect, it can be hard to know how to respond. This in-person workshop explores why changing hoarding behaviour can be difficult, alongside respectful engagement, assessment, practical strategies and organisational responses.

What we’ll cover

Why hoarding behaviour can be difficult to change, including the impact of trauma and frontal lobe changes.
Trauma-informed approaches and how respectful language can improve engagement with people affected by hoarding or environmental neglect.
Challenges associated with animal hoarding, children and hoarding, and environmental neglect (squalor).
Assessment approaches, including the Environmental Cleanliness and Clutter Scale.
The involvement of Fire Rescue Victoria (FRV), the DFFH Make Safe Response, and the impact of unsightly properties on housing agreements.
Practical strategies for supporting people affected by hoarding, including reviewing progress, care plans and goals.
Organisational tasks and how workplace champions can support good practice.
An introduction to Buried in Treasures, a group-based program for people living with hoarding disorder.
