Event description

Understanding the Intersections: Traumatic Brain Injury and Family Violence

Course description

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a very serious but often undiagnosed consequence of intimate partner violence.  This training provides an introduction to TBI, signs and symptoms, consequences, impacts, related challenges and the intersection of TBI and family violence.

Participants will learn new strategies to assist case management with clients including screening, safety planning, support and recovery, and referral to specialist health services.  Resources and links to other TBI learning will be shared with attendees. Upon completion of the training, participants will have the knowledge and tools to better accommodate the needs of women experiencing TBI.

Please be advised that the information provided in this workshop is primarily for professionals who are not brain injury specialists and therefore not directly involved with the treatment of TBI, but who work with women who experience intimate partner violence and TBI in other ways.

Who should attend?

This training is suitable for professionals, practitioners, support and refuge workers, advocates, and staff working in health, child protection, police and justice and other sectors who work regularly with clients who are at risk of, or experiencing family and sexual violence.
