Event description

Understanding your relationship to Country

A city is still Country and Country still speaks to us all, are you listening? For centuries, cityscapes have been seen as sites of modernity that are framed as incompatible with and devoid of Indigenous people and deep culture. Through establishing a personal history of urban Aboriginal identity in Sydney, this hybrid seminar/workshop will unpack the philosophy of Country in the city and guide participants to unearth their own relationship to this enduring cultural framework.

Led by Phoebe McIlwraith, a Bundjalung and Worimi journalist on Gadigal and Wangal Country.

After completing a Bachelors of Business (Political Economy) and working at LegalAid NSW for 4 years, Phoebe produced Voice referendum content at Guardian Australia and now is a content producer at VICE, Refinery29 and Pedestrian.TV. She is also a Communication Lead at First Nations Futures, an economic justice organisation, and freelances in her spare time. Grounded by family histories and backed by experience, Phoebe believes that interrogating the stories we tell about people and place are fundamental to sustainable change.
