Event description

Unearthed - Memories of a Garden in Germantown

Ziebell’s Farmhouse & Heritage Garden were founded in 1850 by German immigrants Sophia and Christian Ziebell and their nine children. The farmhouse became home to five generations of dairy farmers, their children and close relatives. Even now memories abound of what life was like at ‘The Pines’, the name given to the farm, and how the garden has evolved into a treasured oasis in Melbourne’s north.

Hear from Ziebell and Germantown descendants as they reveal firsthand accounts of long gone outhouses, ferneries, heritage roses, orchard and a pet monkey bought from a passing circus! Learn about the little known impact of German immigration on Melbourne, its culture and agriculture.

This event will take place on the grounds of Ziebell’s Farmhouse which is listed with the Heritage Council of Victoria and which features a stunning cottage garden. Free parking and disabled parking available; disabled toilet access.
