Description

On the 11th of October a number of University Students in Canterbury will be Walking with a Purpose fundraising for Fountain of Peace Children's Foundation NZ, supported by Future Leaders Scholars at Lincoln University.

This is a fun opportunity for University students in Canterbury to get together with their friends and explore some of the great outdoors together while making a difference in the lives of others.

The 10 km fundraising loop walk is expected to take around 2 hours.  Starting at 1.30 pm from Sign of the Takahe students will walk up to the summit of the Port Hills overlooking Lyttelton Harbour.  The walking route then joins part of the stunning crater rim walkway around the back of Sugarloaf, through diverse forest and past rocky outcrops. It then links with Thomas's track to the Latter's spur track through both exotic and regenerating native forest around Victoria Park.  The walk finishes back at Sign of the Takahe, where the downstairs bar area will be available for friends to stay and chat and where drinks and food can be purchased.

With schools still closed in Uganda due to the COVID-19 crisis, the Fountain of Peace feeding programme at their Rwenjaza Hillside School is not permitted to restart. Families, in this very impoverished rural area, who totally relied on the feeding programme to provide their children with a cup of porridge each school day, are now struggling to survive.

Money raised through this sponsorship walk will go towards relief packs for these families as part of the Lincoln Future Leaders Scholars "Lend a Hand" project.

The aim is to provide relief packs made up of 10 kg of rice and 10 kg of beans (enough for one family to survive on for one month). Also since planting season is about to begin the relief packs will include 5 kg of corn seed and 5 kg of bean seed for planting.

The cost of these relief packs are $55 each ($35 for the food and $20 for the seeds).

The goal is to raise $2,750 which will provide 50 families with this much needed food for survival.

Sponsorship donations may be made through this site  https://givealittle.co.nz/fundraiser/university-students-walk-with-a-purpose which can be forwarded to friends and family telling them of the fundraising walk.

Registrations are limited to 100 students due to COVID regulations and space available at Sign of the Takahe.

So please sign up to your free registration ticket, share the Give a Little page with your friends and family and we will look forward to seeing you on Sunday the 11th of October for a super fun and memorable day.

If you are registering to be a part of this event please remember on the day to wear sturdy walking shoes and bring a backpack with water and snacks for the hike.  The track is very rocky and steep in parts and can get very muddy and slippery if it's been raining.

PS - (The significance of this 10 km walk is that this represents the distance some Rwenjaza Hillside School students in Uganda walk to and from school each day when school is operating, and is also the distance some families will walk to receive these relief packs).
