Peter Conway Memorial Lecture 2024: United we stand - How people power won the living wage

The Peter Conway Memorial Lecture has been established by UnionAID as an annual event to honour the memory of Peter Conway, union leader, internationalist and foundation Trustee of UnionAID, economist, musician and our friend and colleague. Peter devoted his professional life to workers in Aotearoa New Zealand and the wider Pacific region, and the focus of the lectures is on subjects within the scope of Peter’s interests such as trade unions, international development, and economics.  

Peter played an active role in the Living wage Movement and was instrumental in ensuring the vital role and relationship of the central NZ trade union organisation in Aotearoa with the movement – something that sets us apart of other living wage movements internationally.

Lyndy McIntyre will deliver the 2024 Peter Conway Lecture.  In July 2024, her book ‘Power to Win – The Living Wage Movement in Aotearoa New Zealand’ will be published and Lyndy will speak to this mahi at at the lecture. It was a cause that was deep to Peter’s heart and values.

Speaker: Lyndy McIntyre

Lyndy McIntyre has been active in the New Zealand trade union movement for more than 40 years, initially as a member of the Printers Union and from 1990 in a wide range of roles in Aotearoa and briefly in Australia. She was a key member of the Living Wage Movement Aotearoa NZ from its inception in 2011 until 2020, when she left her role as a community  organiser and began to write a book documenting the story of the movement. Power to Win tells the story of the living wage movement through the voices of workers, activists, leaders and allies. The book sets out to inspire activism to build the community power necessary to win decent wages for all workers.
