Unlocking Creative Potential with Augmented and Virtual Reality

Join us for an engaging and interactive afternoon to discover how immersive and interactive technologies, including extended realities (XR) are being used in the creative sector, and how the University of South Australia's Australian Research Centre for Virtual and Interactive Environment (IVE) can partner with you and your organisation to support your creative needs.

IVE works collaboratively with industry partners to undertake research projects at the nexus of the creative arts, design and human-computer interactions to create new works.

At this information session and networking event, you’ll:

  • hear from Becc Bates, Director, Strategy and Investment for Arts South Australia, about how universities can collaborate with the creative sector to elevate, extend and contribute to state and national creative imperatives/priorities

  • experience hands-on demonstrations of IVE’s research capabilities and hear how AR and VR research is contributing to the sector to produce new works

  • gain valuable industry insights from a panel discussion led by Dr Kristin Alford, Director: MOD. on engaging partners interested in the intersection of creativity and interactive technologies.

At the conclusion of the session, there will be an opportunity to engage with the demonstrations and network with colleagues while enjoying refreshments & canapes.

With nearly 20 years of experience within the public sector, Becc is currently responsible for leading the development and implementation of innovative strategies that ensure South Australia capitalises on the artistic, cultural, economic and social opportunities arising from the diverse capabilities and activities of the arts and cultural sectors and creative industries. 

Kristin Alford, Director: MOD., University of South Australia

Dr Kristin Alford is a futurist and the Inaugural Director of MOD. at the University of South Australia. is a futurist and the Inaugural Director of MOD. at the University of South Australia. MOD. is a future-focused museum of discovery, a place to be and be inspired. Kristin leads a team of designers developing immersive experiences that showcase research and innovation to young adults. This work has been recognised by a number of awards from the Asia-Pacific Network of Science Centres and the Australian Museums and Galleries Association.

Dr Kiera Lindsey, History Advocate, History Trust of South Australia

Dr Kiera Lindsey, History Advocate, History Trust of South Australia
Kiera serves as the principal spokesperson on history and South Australian history. She undertakes research, providing advocacy and outreach to historical organisations, individual practitioners and the broader community as South Australia’s ‘go to’ person for media and work with urban and regional communities.

Dearna Newchurch, Senior Project Manager for Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts, Arts South Australia, Department of the Premier and Cabinet
A proud Kaurna and Narungga woman from South Australia, Dearna is inspired by the intersection of art, culture and social innovation. A creative arts producer at heart, Dearna has strived to increase the visibility and capacity of First Nations arts and creatives through innovative and impactful programs, from producing public art events and programs to leading strategic objectives within the sector. After 16 years working within the arts and culture sector, Dearna now currently leads the implementation of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Arts strategy at Arts South Australia.

Associate Professor Fanke Peng, Professorial Lead and a Deputy Director of the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments, University of South Australia

Associate Professor Fanke Peng, Professorial Lead and a Deputy Director of the Australian Research Centre for Interactive and Virtual Environments, University of South Australia
Associate Professor Fanke Peng is an award-winning educator, designer, and researcher with a passion for design-led innovation. In recognition of her contributions to higher education, she was awarded Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in 2020.

Erik Champion, Enterprise Fellow, University of South Australia

Associate Professor Erik Champion, Enterprise Fellow, University of South Australia
Erik Champion has over two decades of experience with virtual environments and serious games, particularly in virtual heritage. He leads the Playful Cultures Lab (UniSA IVE) and is an ANU honorary Professor; UWA Honorary Research Fellow; Curtin University Emeritus Professor; Adjunct Professor at Universitas Bunda Mulia, and Honorary Professor of Games, Immersive Media & Extended Reality, University of Salford, UK.
