๐ŸŽจ Unlocking Emotion in Film with Colour

A Hands-On Workshop with Industry Veteran Janet Francis

Discover the emotional power of colour in film with Janet Francis, a seasoned professional in costume and production design.

Janet will also unpack how she collaborates with directors and cinematographers to shape and influence colour decisions on set. Sheโ€™ll walk participants through the creative conversations and practical processes that align wardrobe, production design, and lighting to a unified visual tone โ€” and share what to look out for to avoid common missteps or clashing palettes that can weaken a filmโ€™s emotional impact.

Her hands-on experience in the costume and art departments has honed her understanding of how colour influences storytelling and audience perception.ย With a career spanning 3 decades she's been apart of local Sunny Coast Showdown productions as well as hollywood levels projects such as Thor Rangnarok, Hoges: the Paul Hogan Story, Love and Monsters, Young Rock seasons 1 & 2, Thor Love and Thunder and a multiple stage productions.ย

Colour is powerful. It is a language that is visual not spoken. Although certain
colours have different references and meaning around the world depending
on culture, fundamentally, the language of colour is universal. When
the study of colour harmony is combined with the science of psychology,
reactions can be predicted with startling accuracy. Colour works like
music. As jazz pianist Thelonius Monk observed โ€˜there are no wrong
notesโ€™, so also there are no wrong colours. However, the combination of
colours, their tone and intensity can be harmonious or bring disharmony
depending on the combination and ratio of each colour used.

What Youโ€™ll Learn:

  • The psychology and emotion behind colour choices

  • How colour can be used to guide an audienceโ€™s feelings and responses

  • Practical applications in costume design, production design, lighting, and post

  • Real examples and lessons from films

  • Interactive exercises to build your colour confidence

Whether you're a director, production designer, cinematographer, or stylist, this is your chance to learn from a master of her craft.

๐ŸŽ BONUS: All participants receive a FREE Colour Wheel โ€“ an essential tool for any visual storyteller.

Seats are limited, so donโ€™t miss your opportunity to learn how to wield colour with intention, clarity, and emotional impact.
