Unlocking Thinking in the New Curriculum: Top Tips and High-Impact Literacy Strategies
What is disciplinary literacy, and how can I get some?
Literacy is much more than reading and writing for assessment’s sake; it is an integral teaching tool teachers can use to make the thinking of their learning area explicit, supporting students to process and understand content. Across the content areas, the curriculum asks us to teach ākonga to notice, select, describe, compare, explain, discuss, demonstrate, make decisions, analyse, evaluate, justify and more, as they develop increasingly specialised subject area knowledge and skills.
Led by highly experienced teachers, Rebecca Barrett and Charlotte Machin French, this practical introduction explores how literacy can unlock deeper learning and critical thinking when implementing the new NZC.
By the end of the webinar, participants will be able to:
Explain the three levels of literacy: foundational, content and disciplinary literacy, and their roles across curriculum areas and phases.
Identify disciplinary literacy in the curriculum: recognise the links between curriculum knowledge and practice statements and the speaking, reading, writing and thinking skills students need to develop.
Apply practical strategies: select low-preparation, high-impact literacy routines, questioning techniques and thinking frames to use in their very next lesson.
This event will be recorded and content made available to registered attendees regardless of attendance.
This event is also a fundraiser!
This event will be held as a fundraiser for Leanne Meyer, a mother and Secondary teaching colleague close to our hearts. Leanne needs surgery in Canberra, Australia to relieve severe Nutcracker Syndrome that leaves her in intense pain, vomiting, malnutrition, and repeated hospital stays. The family is hopeful surgery will enable her to regain her life back. Without further specialised care, she will likely continue to decline indefinitely. See her Givealittle page here.
All profits from this event will go toward helping to cover travel, accommodation, medical costs, and family support so Leanne can return to being fully present for her children and living a normal life.
