Unpacking Power Workshop

Price $212.50 – $250 AUD + BF Get tickets

Event description

The Unpacking Power workshop is essential for anyone working on (local or international) community development - especially when working with people and communities who are discriminated against or are under-represented or excluded in society because of their gender identity, sexual orientation, race, class, socio-economic status, caste, ethnicity, religion, nationality, dis/ability, occupation (e.g., sex workers) location (e.g., rural, urban) or any other factor.

Power is a very abstract idea, a big and complicated concept. Each of us understands it in our way, within the context of the issues we work on, the people we work with, what we have read about it, or based on our own experiences of power.

The purpose of this workshop is to sort out the confusion and help us move to a shared understanding of power so that all of us who are committed to community development or social justice can build our strategies from a more comprehensive, shared definition and analysis of power as it operates in society, regardless of our specific issues, or socio-economic, political and cultural contexts.

In this workshop, we will unpack:

  • What is it?
  • Where is it?
  • What does it look like?
  • What are its causes or sources?
  • How does it work?

Answering these questions helps us find the best ways to influence or change how power works in specific communities or areas or issues where we work. For instance, we can figure out how to change the dynamics of power in a particular context or location or how to advance or protect the rights of a specific group of people.
