Unproductive Music Club #1: Alvin Lucier's 'Vespers'
Description
The Unproductive Music Club is a new gathering at Extrasensory for working through experimental scores together.
Each session centres on one or more scores chosen by a rotating facilitator. They're drawn from the work of local and international experimental composers and performance artists. In future sessions we would love to include scores devised by members of the group.
The club is participatory rather than performative. Everyone takes part and there is no audience. The scores are open enough to include whoever turns up, whatever your experience or instrument.
This session
We'll begin with Alvin Lucier's Vespers (1968), a piece in which performers use echolocation clicks to navigate and sound out a space. If time allows, we'll move on to Carolyn Chen's How to Assemble.
Lucier's original performers used Sondols, handheld echolocation devices. Those were not available on amazon te he... so in their place we'll be using replica WWII "cricket" clickers, the kind Allied paratroopers used to identify each other in the dark.
No preparation is needed. Scores will be shared with registered attendees.
