Description

There is a sound that continues uncaused, on its own. The yogic tradition calls it unstruck, the note underneath every other note. It is the same word used for the heart, because a heartbeat simply sounds, on its own, for as long as it beats.

Unstruck is a live breathwork series facilitated by Sunni Hart and an incredible line up of musicians. In this space the sound and the musician are active participants. They will each play with presence and "the relationship between intention, improvisation, and what remains beyond control." Grace Ferguson.

Sound becomes another way in, alongside breath, both of them moving toward what's rising, what's ready to move, toward the unstruck place within each of us.

Each person will be invited to add a flower to a mandala as the session evolves, in the spirit of intention, interconnectedness, or whatever it is you feel called to contribute. Blooms generously donated by xflos.

Discounted tickets for First Nations folks. Please email hello@sunnihart.com to arrange.

Lineup

  • Abby Sundborn

    Abby Sundborn

Abby Sundborn’s music fuses her background in classical cello, academic degrees in sound production and interactive composition. The resulting electroacoustic compositions are both elegant and uncanny as she explores human perception of time, the effects of sound on emotion, and the somatics necessary to transform restless energy into spaces of reflection and ease.

  • Genevieve Fry

    Genevieve Fry

Genevieve Fry is an interdisciplinary artist based in Narrm. Interested in exploratory music and improvisation drawing inspiration from the natural world, their soundscapes encourage an inward journey touching on deep time, memory and sense of place.

  • Grace Ferguson

    Grace Ferguson

Grace is a Naarm/Melbourne-based instrumentalist, composer, and educator working across classical and contemporary traditions. Her practice examines layered perceptions of time and the relationship between intention, improvisation, and what remains beyond control.

FAQs

  • Do I need any experience with breathwork?

No. This style is self directed and self paced, and works whether it's your first session or your fiftieth.

  • Is this the style of breathwork where you hyperventilate?

    No!

Hyperventilating, sometimes called futile ventilation, draws in more air than the body needs but in a way that actually delivers less oxygen to the blood, and it's associated with the sympathetic nervous system, the winding up, fight or flight response.

This practice works the other way. It's a parasympathetic activation, an unwinding rather than a winding up, and the breath itself, full, conscious and connected, is longer and slower rather than fast and forced.

Pressured, forced breathing tends to be short and quick, which is closer to how hyperventilation actually behaves. This style opens the breath out rather than speeding it up, which is why it's associated with calm, clarity and discharge rather than panic or overwhelm.

  • Can I do this if I'm on my period, unwell, or recovering from something?

Yes. There are no contraindications to full, conscious, connected breath at this pace. If you have a broken or cracked rib or a significant chest injury, let Sunni know beforehand, since pain may limit how fully you can breathe on the day.

  • What if my hands or face start to tingle or cramp during the session?

This is called tetany, and it's a normal response to the breath, not something wrong. It usually starts as tingling in the hands, sometimes the mouth, and it means stored tension is beginning to release. If it happens, the fastest way through is to relax the breath and let a sound out, whatever wants to come. It always passes, and once it does, the body is usually left more relaxed than before.

  • I've heard breathwork can bring up strong emotion. Is that going to happen to me?

It might, and it might not, and either is fine. What surfaces depends on what's ready, not on how the session is run. If something does come up, you're supported to feel it and sound it out rather than push through it.

  • What if I need to stop or take a break?

You're always in control of your own pace. You can slow down, pause, or come back to normal breathing at any point.

  • What happens after the session ends?

Integration closes every session, time to land and reflect before you go back into your day. Many people feel tired afterward, so it's worth having nothing urgent scheduled straight after.
