UNSW 3 Minute Thesis: Practice & Feedback Sessions with UNSW Founders

Preparing for UNSW 3 Minute Thesis? Join a practical coaching session designed to help HDR candidates turn complex research into a clear, engaging three-minute talk for a non-specialist audience.

These sessions with UNSW Founders focus on structure, story, clarity and confident delivery so you can practise, refine and present with impact, while sharing and hearing from other 3MT participants.

The UNSW 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition challenges UNSW HDR candidates to explain their research and why it matters in just three minutes. It is a communication challenge as much as a research one, requiring clarity, focus and a compelling story for a broad audience.

These practice and feedback sessions are designed to help candidates prepare for 3MT with support from UNSW Founders. Drawing on pitching and audience communication principles, each session gives participants a chance to test their message, strengthen their structure, and improve delivery in a supportive setting.

Participants will work on:

• Distilling a complex research project into one clear idea.

• Framing research for a non-specialist audience.

• Building a stronger opening, sharper narrative and memorable close.

• Practising voice, pace, presence and confidence under time pressure.

• Receiving practical feedback they can apply before heats, faculty training or finals preparation.

Who it’s for?

This series is best suited to UNSW Higher Degree Research candidates preparing for 3MT, especially those who want to improve research storytelling, public speaking and audience engagement.
It also suits candidates who already have a draft talk and want feedback before presenting in faculty rounds or the UNSW finals pathway.
