Join us as the authors of Untold Oshawa: An Expanded History discuss their contributions to this book that explores Black history, Jewish history, women in politics, displaced persons who settled in Oshawa, Indigenous history, labour history, and more. The discussion will be facilitated by Ontario Tech Academic Associate, Amanda Robinson. This event is a collaboration between Ontario Tech Library Services, Ontario Tech Faculty of Social Science and Humanities and Oshawa Museum. Copies of the book will be available for purchase.
Doors open at 5:30 pm. Refreshments will be served.
Authors:
Melissa Cole was born and raised in Oshawa. She has worked at the Oshawa Museum for 20 years. She has a degree in Anthropology from Trent University and a Museum Management and Curatorship certificate from Fleming College. Melissa cares for the extensive artifact collection held at the Oshawa Museum. Her position involves the communication of research findings in exhibits and audio/visual scripts, reports, articles or books. Melissa is also responsible for the design and overseeing the construction, fabrication, installation and maintenance of exhibits. She is passionate about her hometown heritage and challenging the traditional story and history of Oshawa.
Lisa Terech started with the Oshawa Museum in 2007 as a volunteer and joined the staff in October 2010. In the role of Community Engagement, Lisa participates with the Museum team in developing and delivering creative and engaging programs, co-ordinates the Oshawa Historical Society membership, and manages the Oshawa Museum’s online social media presence. Lisa has a Bachelor of Arts degree in History (Honours) and Canadian Studies (General) from Wilfrid Laurier University, a Museum Management and Curatorship Certificate from Sir Sandford Fleming College, and in 2017 was awarded the Ontario Museum Association’s Award of Excellence in Promising Leadership. Lisa truly enjoys going out in the community and being a champion for Oshawa's history and its future. An avid knitter, you’ll find her in a yarn shop when she’s not sharing stories from Oshawa’s past.
Jennifer Weymark is the Archivist at the Oshawa Museum, a position she has held since 2000. In the position of Archivist, Jennifer assumes a lead role in the supervision, development and presentation of the archival collection. Jennifer has authored books on local history, written numerous articles, developed online exhibitions and taken the lead in researching a more diverse look at Oshawa’s history. A frequent speaker at provincial and national conferences, Jennifer has spoken on how archives utilize their collections to tell a more accurate and inclusive history of our communities. Jennifer has a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from Trent University majoring in History and Anthropology, a Museum Management and Curatorship certificate from Sir Sandford Fleming College and a Masters in Museum Studies from the University of Leicester.
Moderator:
Amanda Robinson is an Academic Associate in the Mitch and Leslie Frazer Faculty of Education at Ontario Tech University where she teaches and develops courses on writing, information literacy, and history in the Educational Studies program. Her current research explores intersections of sustainability, digital wellness, and online education.
