Event description

Learn to sew in this fun term of sustainable sewing classes designed to inspire your creativity, and teach you solid basic sewing skills.  Designed for tweens and teens aged 8+. 

Join Harvi, a professional sewer and designer to build your confidence in the art of sewing.  In this programme, participants will learn how to breathe new life into upcycled fabric and clothing, transforming them into unique and stylish creations. 

 

In this course you will learn:

  • The basics of sewing with a machine

  • How to handle common sewing challenges and troubleshooting.

  • Applying creative alterations such as cutting, patching, and adding embellishments.

  • Understanding the importance of sustainable fashion choices.

  • Upcycling techniques: deconstructing old garments and salvaging usable fabric.

  • Exploring ways to continue upcycling and reducing textile waste beyond the course.

WEEK 1 – Getting to know your sewing machine and each other. Practice stiches. 

WEEK 2- 3 – Making a bag + discussing sewing supplies.

Using what you already have (ribbons, shoelaces, straps)

What not to throw away?  Recovering zips, buttons, fastenings etc. from garments destined to landfill.

Shopping in the op-shops - what to buy, what to avoid.

WEEK 4-5 – Making a pencil case or a coin purse + talking about fabric.

Types of fabric – woven vs. knit

Buying new – spotlight vs. specialty shops

Threads and needles

Repurposing old garments

 WEEK 6-7 – Making a cushion and learn machine maintenance.

Taking care of your machine – cleaning and oiling

WEEK 8 – Design and make your own personal project with our array of textiles.

Machines and textiles are all provided but feel free to bring your own machine.

When: Wednesdays, 23rd July- 10th September, 4pm - 6pm

Participants will gain valuable sewing skills but also developed a deeper appreciation for sustainable fashion and its positive impact on the environment. Join us for a fun-filled, eco-conscious sewing journey!
