FORUM FORUM X Urban Design Forum 2024-25 AGM
Event description
For our AGM, we are lucky to be joined for a keynote by Roderick Simpson of Simpson Wilson Architecture and Urban Design, one of Australia's foremost urbanists who will critically reflect on his research and work in Transit Oriented Development (TOD).
Rod's keynote address will focus on the positioning of urban design in relation to metropolitan scale "urban renewal” projects such as the NSW TOD and Activity Centre program in Victoria, exploring questions around the role of urban design, its limits and potential, its ethics and basis for effective advocacy.
Rod will explore comparative TOD strategies over time in the NSW context, and makes the case for why planning must shift beyond a narrow view of transport, productivity and housing targets to give weight to critical place-based factors that make our environments distinct, and liveable.
Prior to being appointed as the inaugural Environment Commissioner of the Greater Sydney Commission, Rod was director of the Urban Design and Urbanism programs at the University of Sydney until 2016. Rod currently holds the role of Adjunct Professor at the University of New South Wales.
