Doing Design Differently Perth:
Using Design for Good with George Aye

Join us for an inspiring and transformative evening as we bring together the Perth community of designers and innovators at our special event featuring co-founder of Greater Good Studio (USA), George Aye. This is a rare opportunity to learn from one of the world's leading figures in designing for good and explore the ethical dimensions of design.

Social design in Australia and Aotearoa New Zealand is charting a new path forward. When you take stock of the region’s unique position in the world, steeped in local Indigenous histories and growing autonomy, we can see that being far from the hubris of Silicon Valley is an asset and not a liability.

Yet the trend of social design being exported across the globe is predominantly WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialised, Rich, and Democratic). And despite their good intentions, a lack of ethical guidelines puts designers in social and public sectors at great risk of doing more harm than good.

The Doing Design Differently tour invites design practitioners, leaders, academics, and students to engage critically and constructively with questions of power and ethics.

Alongside George Aye, we will also hear from local champions of designing 'for good' within the Perth community. Western Australia punches above its weight in the delivery of design projects that seek to achieve social impact, though opportunities to learn from those experiences are rare.

The event will feature a visual showcase of local case studies with the opportunity to ask your burning questions. A keynote presentation and panel will be followed by a sundowner, the chance to connect with others over light refreshments.

About the facilitator - George Aye:
George Aye co-founded Greater Good Studio (USA) to use design to heal, to be just, to be restorative. After seven years at a global innovation firm, he was hired as the first human-centred designer at the Chicago Transit Authority. Since founding Greater Good, he guides clients and teams through complex projects that honour reality, create ownership, and build power.

About our panel:

Lisa Fletcher, Social Impact Designer – RAC

Lisa is part of the RAC’s CoLAB, working alongside RAC members to discover, build and nurture game-changing ideas. As part of the CoLAB, she is currently leading the With, Not For project to codesign accessible and inclusive experiences, with a current focus on RAC’s parks & resorts. Outside of work, Lisa has been experimenting with ‘design for good’ in her local community – creating a traveling seed library called 10,000 Tomatoes.

Dan Bradley, Head of Experience Design – BUPA

Dan is working with the team at BUPA to help build the world's most customer-centric healthcare company. Passionate about the power of data driven human-centred design to improve our world, he builds, coach and leads teams of high performing Designers to innovate and orchestrate cohesive digital customer experiences.

His previous role in consulting saw him build a team from scratch that within 3 years won the Good Design Australia 2022 Gold Award for Service Design for co-creating a new digital experience for NAB which increased the financial literacy of 300,000+ customers, building trust and saving the business $1.2m. (and 80+ tons of paper).

Jethro Sercombe – Director of Innovation Practice – Innovation Unit ANZ

Jethro is a leading practitioner of social service design in Western Australia and has been involved in the development of many impactful service models across WA. Jethro has a passion for the way society treats its most vulnerable citizens, and the potential for innovative services and adaptive systems to respond to complex health and social issues.

Before embracing the innovation potential of service design and co-design, Jethro dedicated 15 years of work to youth homelessness. In 2013, Jethro was named one of Business News’ 40 under 40 and in 2019 was awarded a Westpac Social Change Fellowship for his work in social innovation.
