Using Medicinal Herbs - Four Part Workshop Series Online

Starting Tuesday 21st May, 10am - 12pm

Herb Uses in Daily Life * Herbally Enhanced Gardening * Storing Herbs for Year Round * Cooking with Herbs & Kitchen Rituals Each week we will explore different themes on Using Medicinal Herbs.

We feature a collection of our favourite herbs and hilight their medicinal benefits, ecological benefits, ethnobotany, how to correctly identify and propagate.

We will also have a BONUS practical component accompanying each week’s class.Wednesdays in May @ 10am - 12 / 12:30pm (flexible end time).

Week 1
How to Use Herbs in Our Daily Life
* We will explore uses of herbs : tea, decoction, direct application, wound wash, tincture, clear space / bring in new energy & ancestral connection.
* Ritual tea use and daily use.
* Medicinal herb features : white sage, mugwort and rosemary.
* BONUS Practical - Make a herb incense for cleansing rituals.

Week 2
Growing Herbs That Enhance Our Gardens
* Herb garden inspiring designs.
* Explore proximity and access to enhance relationships between garden elements.
* Community access to gardens to garden in.
* Biodynamic ‘accumulators’, plants that benefit soil enrichment.
Medicinal herb features - comfrey, yarrow, horsetail, chamomile, valerian.
* BONUS Practical - Make a compost tea and how to apply in your garden.

Week 3
Bringing Home the Harvest - Longer Term Use and Storage of Herbs
* Harvesting herbs and storage techniques.
* Explore various ways we can make herbal medicine : tinctures, vinegars, salves, cremes etc.
* Medicinal herb features - Mullein, Aloe, tarragon, lavender.
* BONUS Practical - Options to dry and store herbs at home and how to use use a dehydrator and how to create your own home made medicinal tinctures.

Week 4
Cooking with Herbs - Food is Medicine + Kitchen Rituals
* Bring the harvest of herbs into our kitchen - loads of really great ideas to bring recipes and herbal related kitchen rituals into our kitchen.
* Some delicious herbal recipes ideas included. You will be inspired!
* Medicinal herb features : Classic Mediterranean herbs - thyme, Dittany of Crete, Oregano PLUS tropical perennial cooking herbs - Mexican / perennial coriander, turmeric and Okinawa Spinach.
* BONUS Practical - herbal infused olive oil + herbal salad dressings

Facilitators Bio
Tamara Griffiths (Melbourne)
Tamara is an experienced and passionate permaculture educator with a deep love of the Earth. Moonrise Permaculture is home base for Tamara where she teaches and consults on permaculture designs. She is learning how to drive heavy machinery to install permaculture earthworks.
Tamara was owner of Forestedge Permaculture Nursery in the Dandenong Ranges for over 5 years. The nursery sold edible, medicinal and rare plants as well as King Stropharia mushroom kits. Tamara undertook her PDC in 2007 with Bill Mollison and Geoff Lawton. She quickly realised that permaculture was her life path and learned as much as she could. After a 10 month internship with Bill Mollison in Tasmania (2010) she did teacher training with Robin Clayfield, Rowe Morrow, Geoff Lawton and David Holmgren (2011). Tamara began teaching PDCs a short time later.
Tamara also has a Masters degree in Public History and a lifelong love of learning and research, working as a historian, heritage consultant and researcher for museums, government and archaeologists.

Annaliese Hordern (Sunshine Coast)
Creative Director of the Change Makers PDC, Annaliese is passionate about permaculture, restorative Earth based and community regeneration with a focus on ethnobotanical research and holistic lifestyle.
Annaliese holds a degree in Environmental Resource Management and a Diploma of Permaculture. She draws upon two decades of Permaculture experiences, intentionally exploring our world learning from eco-communities and Permaculture pioneers about localised regenerative practices for land and people. Annaliese worked with Green Harvest for 4 years, learning from horticulture expert Frances Micheals about edible propagation, open pollinated seeds and organic gardening. Annaliese spent over a decade working with the Happy Herb Company, where she gained the breath of her herbal knowledge. She runs Tea Haven Permaculture Gardens, in Maleny, where she lives with a small posse in a lush subtropical edible botanical garden.Legacy - Honouring the work of Isabell Shipard, who Annaliese learnt so much from, and supported the Shipard family to close the iconic Nursery, and celebrate Isabell's legacy.
