UARC’s Co-Directors, Professor David Brown and Professor Deb Parker, who will introduce this month's presenter. We are delighted to have Dr Suyin Hor presenting on Seeing Complexity in Action: How Video Can Transform Our Understanding of Aged Care.

How can we better understand the real-world challenges of aged care?

Suyin will help us answer this question by introducing us to video-reflexive ethnography - a research methodology that uses video to reveal the complexity of everyday work and encourage those at the frontline to reimagine how they work together. Through real examples, we’ll explore how this approach generates practical insights about everyday work, and could help design infection control strategies that are not only safe but also compassionate and context-appropriate. Join us to see how video can be a powerful tool for engagement and change across disciplines.

About the Speaker

Dr Suyin Hor

Dr Suyin Hor is a Senior Lecturer and HDR Coordinator in the School of Public Health. She is a social scientist interested in how safe and high quality care is accomplished, amidst the complexity of health and aged care services.

Suyin's work examines how safety is accomplished in healthcare, with a specialisation in infection prevention and control (IPC). Her research is done in collaboration with healthcare professionals, patients and their carers, and has led to broadened understandings of safety, communication, and IPC; sustained practice and policy changes, as well as reductions in MRSA prevalence. She is an investigator on three NHMRC-funded projects examining experiences of IPC during the COVID-19 pandemic; community preparedness for future pandemics; and improving IPC in residential aged care homes. She supervises 7 HDR students across a range of projects, and is also involved in research on incident management, risk communication, clinical reasoning, care of women who have experienced perinatal loss, and supporting neurodivergent university students.
