Our first speaker for 2026 will be Distinguished Professor Tuan V. Nguyen, UARC's Theme Lead for Emerging Technology. An abstract for Tuan’s talk is below.

Osteoporosis: treatment of high risk individuals vs community prevention -- revisit Rose Paradox.

Abstract: Hip fracture is the most serious consequence of osteoporosis, a disease affecting approximately 30% of women and 10% of men aged 50 years and older. Current clinical practice appropriately recommends treatment for individuals diagnosed with osteoporosis, and this approach is well supported by evidence. However, our work has shown that most hip fractures occur in people who do not meet the diagnostic threshold for osteoporosis. As a result, treating only individuals with osteoporosis, while important, cannot prevent a large proportion of hip fractures at the population level. In this presentation, I revisit the Rose Prevention Paradox—the idea that a large number of people at modest risk can contribute more cases than a small number of people at high risk—and use it to argue for a broader prevention strategy. Rather than focusing solely on high-risk individuals, we need community-wide approaches that shift fracture risk across the whole population and reduce the overall burden of hip fractures.

About the Speaker

Dr Tuan V. Nguyen

Dr Tuan V Nguyen AM is a Leadership Fellow (previously known as Australia Fellow) of the National Health and Medical Research Council and Distinguished Professor of Predictive Medicine at the School of Biomedical Engineering, and Director of the Centre for Health Technologies. He is UARC's Theme Lead for Emerging Technology, and holds an appointment as an Adjunct Professor of Epidemiology at UNSW Medicine, UNSW Sydney.
